What do we think of Kugelmass’s thoughts on the drawbacks of academic blogging?

Responding to the comment about how what they are doing should is increasingly being viewed ‘worthless’ (free). I thought Gillian Welch said best in Everything is Free with respect to file sharing in the music business.

    Everything is free now,
    That’s what they say.
    Everything I ever done,
    Gotta give it away.
    Someone hit the big score.
    They figured it out,
That we’re gonna do it anyway,
    Even if doesn’t pay.

I can get a tip jar,
    Gas up the car,
And try to make a little change
    Down at the bar.

Or I can get a straight job,
    I’ve done it before.
    I never minded working hard,
    It’s who I’m working for.

    (Chorus)

    Every day I wake up,
    Hummin’ a song.
But I don’t need to run around,
    I just stay home.

And sing a little love song,
    My love, to myself.
If there’s something that you want to hear,
    You can sing it yourself.

    ‘Cause everything is free now,
    That what I say.
No one’s got to listen to
    The words in my head.
    Someone hit the big score,
    And I figured it out,
That we’re gonna do it anyway,
    Even if doesn’t pay

    Listen over here.

    Probably the best line.

  3. I think I put it best in my song “Theory Is Free” when I sang:

    Everything is free
    Especially my new
    book on hedgemony
    It references Gramsci
I’m gonna put some tip jars out on the bar
And take to living out of my car
I know I’ll get lots of money out of dissertating publicly on Balibar
Because he makes more sense to people
    the drunker you are.

My song is a beautiful statement about how we should live together in peace, holding hands, unconcerned with material things. I consider my song to be Buddhist.

  4. PS. It is spelled “hegemony.”

Hmmm, I take it you were not talking about the song I posted as I understood her siding with some of your concerns. Her only addition is the assumption that people will actually feel the void when it is missing. I assume that you assume the same but did not state it. Anyway, I’m sure I’m missing all sorts of irony that is cutting both ways.
