Any takers?

In the spirit of the periodic CFPs on “religion and violence,” I wonder if we could somehow put together a conference on “nation-states and violence” or “money and violence” or “natural resources and violence” or “race and violence” or “sex and violence.” Violence comes in so many delightful packages — though I’m sure religion is flattered by the attention it gets in this context, other causes of violence deserve investigation as well.

I did a quick google search just to be sure, and my suspicions were immediately confirmed. The real question is how you could possibly have gotten the idea that there aren’t already many conferences on the other topics you mention.

There’s no sex in your violence.

The point of this post isn’t that other sources of violence aren’t studied. The point was rather that I’m sick of the topic of “religion and violence.”

How about a conference on “Religion and Violence” and violence?

How about “Religion and Science”?

How about “Memory and Violence”?

I was also going to include “Religion and Science” in the post, but thought that risked softening its impact.
Perhaps we need to remove religion from the picture and study “Science and Violence.”

Or Nation-states, theology, and violence?

Ooh! Nation-states, theology, and science!

Religion and Violence: For Violence.

You might hate it…in fact, you’ll probably hate it, but you should read William Cavanaugh’s new book THE MYTH OF RELIGIOUS VIOLENCE on this count. It’s quite convincing in his critique of the analytic mudiness as to what counts as ‘religious violence’.

I find Cavanaugh’s critique of the idea of “religious violence” very convincing. It’s just his constructive proposal that I object to.

I am in awe Hill quoted Bush.

I like the suggestion for a conference on “religion and violence” and violence! Actually this is one of the theses in Cavanaugh’s book.
