As near as I can tell, Awkwardness is on the verge of going out of print, at least in the US. I’ve been offered a 90% discount to buy as many copies as I want, after which they will be pulping the majority of the copies they have on hand. Presumably ebooks will be available forever, but on the off chance that you’ve been meaning to buy a copy and haven’t gotten around to it, you should probably do so now (Amazon: US, UK; Book Depository). (I don’t have plans to buy up substantial numbers to sell through the blog or anything, because I figure that is pretty well tapped out at this point.)

I bought the kindle editions of Awkwardness and Sociopaths a few weeks back. I plan on pushing them on a philosophy club I’m a part of here in Asia. There are profs in the group, so heck, they might assign them to their students.

Thanks for your support. Being assigned as a textbook is the true road to wealth.

Why does this happen? I already bought Awkwardness or I’d buy it. The destruction of books makes me depressed.

They have to threaten to pulp it, because otherwise there’s no credibility to the price they’re asking.

Remaindering is not an option?

In theory, remaindering would be another option. I’m saying that there has to be some way of preventing me from being able to say, “I know there will come a point where it will cost more for you to keep storing them than to simply give them to me.”

As you may be aware in the UK we have a policy of multiculturalism which incorporates elements of what you suggest in the book – though it is fatally undermined by the notion of tolerance. Multiculturalism + Awkwardness I find an acceptable way forward which is important for me given the currant backlash against multiculturalism.
It also avoids the vomit inducing ‘celebration of difference’.
